IN THE BATTER'S BOX
UNLV (22-21, 7-8 MWC) returns home following a five-game road trip to host Cal State Northridge (17-25, 4-11 Big West) in a two-game midweek series that gets underway Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels and Matadors will play again on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., and two teams have already played this sesaon, with CSN taking two games from UNLV on March 31 and April 1 in Northridge, Calif. This past weekend UNLV took two-of-three from Air Force in Colorado Springs, giving the Rebels their first two road wins of the season. Overall they are 2-13 away from Las Vegas on the year, but are a robust 20-8 at the friendly confines of Earl E. Wilson Stadium. Tuesday's game will be carried live on KSHP 1400 AM, with Bob Blum and Adam Candee calling the action. UNLV is now 22-21 overall and 7-8 in the MWC after winning the final two games of a three-game set at Air Force this past weekend, giving the Rebels their first road wins this season ... After dropping the opener with the Falcons on Friday by a score of 7-5, UNLV rebounded to win on Saturday, 20-13, and again on Sunday, 11-3 ... Senior outfielder J.J. Sferra saw his 28-game hitting streak come to and end on March 22, as he went 0-for-5 against the Red Raiders ... The streak is the third longest in school history and overall Sferra has a .407 (67-167) batting average ... Jesse Wight has hit a team-high six home runs while a trio of Rebels have knocked in a team-leading 29 runs ... Freshman pitcher Tanner Peters is leading the Rebels on the mound, posting a strong rookie season with a 5-3 record to go with a 3.44 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 10 starts ... The freshman threw the school's fifth one-hit complete game on April 17 in a 2-0 win over Northern Colorado ... UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith has a career record of 169-177 (.488) and is in his sixth season ... The 169 wins are the second most in school history ... The Rebels opened the 2009 season by playing their first 14 games at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, which is tied for the third-longest such stretch in the nation.
MATADORS AT A GLANCE
Cal State Northridge brings a 17-25 overall mark and a 4-11 Big West record into the series after getting swept in a three-game series last weekend by UC Riverside ... Those three losses came on the heels of a three-game winning streak by CSN, including a pair of wins over Lon Beach State ... CSN has struggled on the road, posting a record of just 1-13 in games outside of Matador Field, where they are 16-12 in 2009 ... At the plate CSN is hitting .270 as a team and is being paced by Richard Cates, who is hitting .374 (64-171) with two home runs and 23 RBI ... Ryan Pineda is the top power threat for the Matadors, as he has hit eight home runs and driven in 32 runs ... The Matadors have posted a 4.89 ERA, and Paul Tremlin is 5-1 with a 4.00 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 36 innings of work ... CSN closer Brian Slover has five saves and a 1.03 ERA, to go along with a 2-3 overall record and 40 strikeouts ... Cal State Northridge is coached by Steve Rousey, who is 133-244-1 in his eighth season at the helm of the Matadors.
