Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - It was a pair of rough innings that did in UNLV baseball in an 8-2 loss to Cal State Northridge in a non-conference game on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels allowed four runs to the Matadors in both the second and seventh innings which proved to be the difference in the game, as UNLV gave up no runs and just five hits in the other frames. With the loss UNLV is now 23-22 overall while Cal State Northridge improved to 18-26 on the season.

UNLV grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring the game's first run on three singles, the final one coming off the bat of Jesse Wight which pushed Bryan Resnick across the plate. That lead would be short lived, as the Matadors got to Rebel starter Bryan Gilbertson in the top half of the second, scoring four runs on three hits, loading the bases twice and getting a two-run single by Justin DeMarco to cap the rally.

The Rebels cut into the lead in the third, when J.J. Sferra doubled to open the frame and then scored on Jarred Frierson's single to left, making the score 4-2, which is where the game stayed for the next three innings.

In the seventh CSUN blew the game open with another four-run inning, getting a total of five hits and two home runs to balloon the lead to six runs at 8-2. Ryan Pineda hit a solo home run with one out, and following two singles Justin Slover cleared the bags with a three-run shot to left field.

UNLV finished with 11 hits in the game compared to 13 for the Matadors, and the first four batters in the Rebels' lineup had two hits each.

UNLV now heads out on the road for a three-game series at New Mexico, which will get underway on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. (PT) at Isotopes Park.
