TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 22 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 5-over-par 289 on Thursday and is in fourth place at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National (par 71, 7,136 yards).
The Rebels trail tournament-leader TCU by 13 shots after the Horned Frogs opened the tournament with an 8-under 276. San Diego State is second at 1-under, followed by New Mexico at even par. Colorado State, BYU and Utah are all tied for fifth at 7-over, while Air Force is eighth at 9-over and Wyoming is ninth at 11-over.
Individually, TCU's Tom Hoge leads the field by a shot at 4-under 67. UNLV's Ji Moon and San Diego State's Bryan Martin are both tied for second at 3-under 68.
Other Rebel scores: defending champion Eddie Olson and Derek Ernst are both tied for 22nd at 2-over 73, while Brett Kanda and Colby Smith are both tied for 34th at 4-over 75.
Play at the 54-hole tournament will continue on Friday with 18 holes and conclude on Saturday. Play begins each day at 7 a.m. PDT. Live stats for the MWC Championship are available through a link on UNLVRebels.com.
