IN THE BATTER'S BOX
UNLV (15-16, 4-5 MWC) remains at Earl E. Wilson Stadium and hosts No. 18 San Diego State (23-11, 6-3 MWC) in a three-game Mountain West Conference series that gets begins Thursday at 7:00 p.m. (PT). The two teams will meet again on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and the series will wrap up on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and both those games will be carried live on 1400 KSHP AM. UNLV is looking to build on its recent series win over Utah, as the Rebels took two-of-three from the Utes last weekend, snapping a nine-game slide in the process. UNLV has already played a three-game set with San Diego State this year, traveling to San Diego on March 13-15 in the conference opener for both teams. REBELS AT A GLANCE
UNLV is now 15-16 overall and 4-5 in the MWC after taking two-of-three games against Utah last weekend at Earl E. Wilson Stadium ... The Rebels lost the opener of the series 8-5, but then earned wins by scores of 7-5 and 4-3 ... The one-run win on Sunday came in the bottom of the 10th inning when Bryan Resnick scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch ... The victory over Utah on Saturday snapped a nine-game losing streak ... Senior outfielder J.J. Sferra currently has a 22-game hitting streak, which started in the first game of a doubleheader against Saint Peter's College on Feb. 28, and during that span Sferra is hitting .478 (44-92) ... Overall Sferra leads the Rebels with a .418 batting average ... Jesse Wight has hit a team-high five home runs while Drew Beuerlein has knocked in a team-leading 22 runs and is also hitting .407 (24-59) in 17 games ... Freshman pitcher Tanner Peters is leading the Rebels on the mound, having made a strong debut with a 4-2 record to go with a 3.56 ERA and 36 strikeouts in seven starts ... UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith has a career record of 162-172 (.484) and is in his sixth season ... The 162 wins are the second most in school history ... The Rebels opened the season by playing their first 14 games at Earl E. Wilson Stadium, which is tied for the third-longest such stretch in the nation.
AZTECS AT A GLANCE
No. 18 San Diego State brings a 23-11 overall mark and a 6-3 league record into the series after beating Long Beach State, 4-3, on Tuesday ... The Aztecs are ranked No. 18 in the country by Baseball America ... The Aztecs have won four of their last five ... SDSU is 9-2 on the road this year ... At the plate the Aztecs are hitting .287 as a team and are being paced by Erik Castro, who is hitting .380 (38-100) with six home runs and 28 RBI ... Thursday-night starter Stephen Strasburg is 6-0 with a 1.49 ERA in seven starts, striking out 94 and walking 10 in 48.1 innings of work ... SDSU is coached by MLB Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, who is 194-201 in his seventh year with the Aztecs.
