AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 21 UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 23-over-par 307 on Saturday and finished in seventh place at the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Austin Regional, which was played at The University of Texas Golf Club (par 71, 7,412 yards). By not finishing in the top five at the 13-team event, the Rebels season has concluded.
Florida shot a final-round 10-over 294 and won the team title by two shots at 22-over 874. Texas Tech was second at 24-over, followed by host Texas at 25-over, Stanford at 35-over and Michigan at 36-over. All five teams advanced to the NCAA finals. Lamar finished sixth at 39-over, while UNLV finished the tournament at 40-over. Michigan's 8-over 292 was the lowest team score on Saturday.
Lance Lopez of Texas held on to the individual lead to claim medalist honors by five shots. He shot a final-round 1-over 72 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 4-under 209. Florida's Billy Horschel finished second at 1-over 214 after a final-round 3-under 68.
The low five teams and low individual not on those teams advanced to the NCAA Championship. Lamar's Hugues Joannes earned the individual qualifying spot, tying for fourth place at 3-over.
UNLV's Eddie Olson paced the Rebels by finishing the tournament in ninth place at 5-over 218 after a final-round 6-over 77. Other Rebel players: Ji Moon tied for 12th at 8-over 221 after a final-round 4-over 75, Colby Smith tied for 27th at 13-over 226 after a final-round 7-over 78, Derek Ernst tied for 41st at 14-over 227 after a final-round 6-over 77 and Brett Kanda tied for 56th at 20-over 233 after a final-round 8-over 79.
The 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be held May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
