TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's swimming and diving team pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday afternoon, taking down Arizona 138-123 in a tri-meet on the Arizona campus. UNLV also posted a 206-55 win over Arizona State to start out the season at 2-0. Arizona had finished the 2010 season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and finished third at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
UNLV's women also swam in what was a quad-meet for them. The Rebels dropped decisions to Arizona State (175-85) and Arizona (176-82), but posted a 131.5-128.5 win over Kansas to stand at 2-2 after the weekend.
The Rebels won a total of nine of 14 events on the men's side, including both relays. Leading the way was double-event winner Kyle Virva, as he won the 100 free in a time of 45.41, and the 200 free in 1:39.84. Other single-event winners included David Szele in the 100 breast (55.69), Steven Nelms in the 50 free (20.43), Andrew Morrell in the 200 breast (2:01.63), Spencer Wollkind in the 500 free (4:38.91) and Cody Roberts in the 100 fly (48.45). The 400 medley relay team of David Seiler, Dzele, Roberts and Nelms touched the wall in 3:16.38 for a first-place finish, while Nelms, Virva, Charlie Tapp and Seiler won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:00.44.
On the women's side, UNLV would win one event, with freshman Jessica Helm swimming a time of 10:04.81 in the 1000 free. Katie Herrington placed second in the 100 fly in 56.06, and Lisa Gillespie was also second in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:06.22.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6, when they host BYU in a conference meet at 2 pm at Buchanan Natatorium.
