Scarlet Throttles Black in Game One

Nov. 12, 2010

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Powered behind a banner day from captain Richie Jimenez, Team Scarlet took game one of the UNLV fall World Series by an 11-2 count over Team Black today at Wilson Stadium.

"Richie gets better by the day," said first-year head coach Tim Chambers. "He's worked hard to revamp his approach at the plate and has bought into some things that we're trying to help him with so he can continue to enjoy that success."

Jimenez, Team Scarlet's starting shortstop, finished the day a perfect 5-for-5 with a game-high four RBI and also scored three runs. His five hits was nearly one-third of his team's total and topped Team Black's output by one.

Team Scarlet lit the scoreboard up early and often, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Jimenez's two-out, two-RBI double down the left-field line scored the first runs of the series. Cory Welch then singled home Jimenez to round of the scoring in the first.

Righty Tanner Peters got the start for Team Scarlet and went to work in the first, needing just nine pitches to end the inning. Peters tossed four innings on the day, giving up just one hit while striking out two.

"Tanner was really good today," noted Chambers. "Team Black has a few injuries and just didn't play well today in general, but Tanner was a big reason for their low offensive output early in the game."

After tacking on a run in both the second and third innings, Team Black broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. Jimenez's RBI single up the middle was followed by a two-RBI base knock through the left side that scored Welch and Jimenez.

The Rebels will continue their fall classic next week and have added an additional number of games. The two teams will meet next on Tuesday, Nov. 16th at 3 p.m. at Wilson Stadium. Additional games added to the slate will take place on Nov. 19thand 20th at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 23rd at 3 p.m.
