SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (9-20, 4-11 MWC) suffered a 3-0 loss to the San Diego State Aztecs (15-14, 7-6) Thursday night at Peterson Gym in San Diego. The Aztecs won the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-23.
The Aztecs out-hit the Rebels by a .253 to .175 margin and registered seven more kills (43-36) in four less swings (99-103). Both teams tallied 18 kills apiece in the contest. SDSU began the match with a .353 efficiency in the opening frame, but watched as its hitting trailed off set by set to .226 in the second and .176 in the third. UNLV, on the other hand, came out of the gates with a .263 effort before .192 and .077 efforts in the second and third sets, respectively.
Makenzie Moea'i tied for the match-high in kills with 11 in a losing effort for UNLV. Moea'i also chipped in four digs.
Madeline Westman notched nine kills of her own with a .400 hitting tally. Westman added seven assisted blocks to her yearly total to move into fourth in UNLV's single-season record book with 101. She is now tied for seventh in total blocks in the yearly charts with 117.
Kendra Glendenning and Amanda Alles split the setting duties for the Rebels, as they dished out 16 and 11 assists, respectively. Glendenning also had seven digs, while Alles had one kill and one assisted block.
Kela Lau Hee led UNLV with nine digs with Nile Te'o, Sara Nehf and Glendenning following closely behind with seven apiece.
The Aztecs were paced offensively by Kyley Sexton's 11 kills and 10 more from Raegan Shelton. Sexton pitched in two aces, two digs, one assist and one assisted block.
Johnna Fouch fell one dig shy of a double-double with a nine-dig effort paired with 33 assists. Both figures were good enough for match highs. Fouch also added four kills, two aces and one assisted block.
The match featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. Nine of the ties happened in the third and final frame, as did six of the lead changes.
The Rebels close out the regular season next Friday night against the Air Force Falcons in Colorado. The first serve is slated for 7:00 pm.
