LAS VEGAS - The 2010 edition of the UNLV baseball team put runs on the board early and often, beating the Alumni Team 22-2 on a warm Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in a game that went eight innings.
The Rebels scored six runs in the bottom of the first to erase an early two-run deficit, and then scored runs in each of the next six innings, collecting 21 hits. Drew Beuerlein and RJ Arnold hit a pair of doubles, Cash Thomas drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and Kris Kaplan collected two run-scoring singles in the win.
It didn't take long for the Alumni team to get on the board, scoring runs on a double by former All-American Eric Nielsen and then a bases loaded walk to grab a 2-0 lead before an out was even recorded. But UNLV starter Billy Wardell settled down and struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam, and in the bottom half of the inning the Rebels took the lead for good.
UNLV used five pitchers total and the group gave up just one more hit the rest of the afternoon in giving the Rebels their sixth-straight win in the annual Alumni Game.
The Rebels open up their regular season on Friday, Feb. 19, at home against Sacramento State, with the first pitch slated to be tossed at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
