LAS VEGAS - UNLV dropped its second in a row to open up the 2010 season, losing to Sacramento State 19-5 on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in front of 417 fans.
The Hornets scored the first four runs of the game, and from the fifth through eighth innings they scored a combined 15 runs to pull away from the host Rebels in winning the first two games of the opening series. UNLV starter Stephen Singer took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in four innings of work, while Sacramento State starter Brandon Sandoval earned the win, allowing three runs on three hits in five innings.
UNLV scored its five runs on eight hits, with Nolan Clark pacing the offense with two hits and two runs scored. Sacramento State collected 22 hits on the afternoon, including nine extra-base hits, while six Hornet hitters had at least two hits. The Rebels used five pitchers while the Hornets threw four pitchers on the afternoon.
UNLV and Sacramento State wrap up their series Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch at Wilson Stadium scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (PT), with Andrew Beresford taking the mound for the Rebels.
