UNLV-Southern Utah Game Notes
LEADING OFF
UNLV (1-2, 0-0 Mountain West Conference) will look to win its second straight game when it hosts Southern Utah (0-3, 0-0 Summit League) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on Tuesday night, with the first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. (PT). Live stats and a live video stream of the game will be available at www.UNLVRebels.com, and this will be the fourth of eight straight games at home for the Rebels to open up the 2010 season. UNLV began its 2010 campaign by dropping two of three to Sacramento State last weekend, losing 10-8 (11 innings) on Friday and 19-5 on Saturday before rebounding to win 18-14 on Sunday. In the win UNLV senior outfielder Jarred Frierson hit three home runs, marking the 16th time in school history that a player hit three round trippers runs in a single game. Tuesday night's promotion at Wilson Stadium is "$2 Tuesday", where all tickets to the game are just $2.
REBELS AT A GLANCE
UNLV opened the 2010 season this past weekend and dropped two of three against Sacramento State at Earl E. Wilson Stadium ... The season opener went to extra innings, the first opener to go extra innings since the 2004 season opener, when UNLV lost at Cal State Fullerton, 9-8, in 11 innings on Feb. 6, 2004 ... Runs were not hard to come by for the Rebels, as they scored a total of 31 runs over the three games, including 18 in winning the final game of the set on Sunday ... The Rebels hit five home runs on Sunday, including the trio off the bat of Freierson ... UNLV is hitting .322 as a team after three games, with seven home runs, four doubles and 25 RBI ... Travis Feiner leads the UNLV regulars with a .455 (5-11) average in three starts ... UNLV has a .400 on-base percentage and a .534 slugging percentage, but despite all the offense the Rebels did not steal a base in the series ... UNLV right-hander Brady Zuniga made a strong debut out of the bullpen, striking out seven batters, giving up one hit and not allowing a run in two appearances and 2.2 innings of work ... UNLV is in its seventh season under head coach Buddy Gouldsmith, who has a career record of 174-190 (.478), and his 174 victories are the second most in school history.
THUNDERBIRDS AT A GLANCE
Southern Utah comes into Tuesday's game not only looking for its first win of 2010, but also the team's first run of the season, as the Thunderbirds were held scoreless in getting swept by Cal in a three-game series last weekend ... SUU lost by scores of 14-0, 22-0 and 10-0, the with the final two games coming in a doubleheader with the Bears ... Bucky Aona leads the Thunderbirds at the plate with a .556 (5-9) but overall the team is hitting .232 with just two doubles ... SUU is coached by David Eldridge, who is 121-156 (.471) overall in his sixth season at the helm.
