Wolfe Packs Bags For Indy

Feb. 23, 2010

LAS VEGAS - Ryan Wolfe leaves Wednesday for this week's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and the best receiver in UNLV history says that while he won't be able to run for scouts from the 32 teams in attendance, he is definitely looking forward to what is essentially a job interview to play professional football.

"I'm really pleased with the progress but I am just taking each week as it comes," Wolfe says about rehabbing his left foot after a fluke practice injury in November required surgery. "I wouldn't say I'm nervous about going to the Combine, just really excited."

Wolfe, who shattered nearly every Rebel career receiving record and rose to as high as 12th in college football history with 283 catches despite missing his last game with the injury, spent four weeks on crutches over the holidays but is planning on being able to run his speed drills at UNLV's Pro Timing Day on campus in late March.

As for this week's appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium along with a pair of former Rebel teammates, OLB Jason Beauchamp and OG Joe Hawley, the Hart High School product is preparing to get poked and prodded and says he plans on performing his bench press.

The receivers group is scheduled for its pre-physical exams and X-rays along with some interviews with NFL personnel on Thursday. On Friday those players will be measured, have more physicals and take the famed Wonderlic Test. Saturday includes an NFL Players Association meeting and more interviews while the physical workouts are scheduled for his group on Sunday.

Asked if was encouraged by the immediate success that another former Mountain West Conference star ball catcher, BYU product Austin Collie, had with the Indianapolis Colts last fall, Wolfe admits there are some similarities.

"I could see some people making a link between me and Collie," says Wolfe, who was honored before last Saturday's Runnin' Rebel game as the UNLV Sportsman of the Year for 2009. "I used to compete against him and he has a similar build and about the same speed as me. Hopefully I will get the same opportunity in the NFL."

The Combine will again be televised by NFL Network and the NFL Draft will be held April 22-24.
