UNLV To Take On Northwestern

LEADING OFF
UNLV (10-4, 0-0 Mountain West Conference) remains at home looking to start another winning streak when it hosts Northwestern (3-7, 0-0 Big Ten) in a four-game series that gets underway Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, with game times at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and the Rebels and Wildcats will close out the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. UNLV is looking to rebound after losing to visiting Columbia, 8-6, last Sunday at home in the final of a four-game series between the two teams at Wilson Stadium. UNLV won the first three games with Columbia, which included the Rebels scoring a stunning eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in an eventual 13-12 victory over the Lions in game two of a Saturday doubleheader.

REBELS AT A GLANCE
UNLV improved its record to 10-4 by winning three of four games against Columbia last weekend at home, earning victories in the first three games before losing the final on Sunday ... UNLV has played in three extra-inning games this season, starting with its season opener that went 11 innings, the first opener to go extras since the 2004 season opener, when UNLV lost at Cal State Fullerton, 9-8, in 11 innings on Feb. 6, 2004 ... Runs have not been hard to come by for the Rebels, as they have scored a total of 150 through 14 games, including 18 on Feb. 21 against Sacramento State and 22 against Temple on Feb. 26 ... UNLV is hitting .334 as a team, with 15 home runs, 32 doubles and 127 RBI ... R.J. Arnold leads the UNLV regulars with a .431 (22-51) average, and the freshman leads the Rebels with four home runs ... Drew Beuerlein is hitting .424 (25-59) with seven doubles and 16 RBI ... Jarred Frierson and Kyle Kretchmer have each hit three home runs for the Rebels ... UNLV closer Matt Hutchison is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and also has three saves in seven appearances, striking out 16 and walking three in 8.1 innings of work ... UNLV is in its seventh season under head coach Buddy Gouldsmith, who has a career record of 183-192 (.488), and his 183 victories are the second most in school history.

WILDCATS AT A GLANCE
Northwestern (3-7) continues its extended road trip to open up the year, heading to Las Vegas for a four-game set ... The Wildcats will actually play their first 24 games on the road and will not play a home game until April 2 ... Northwestern went 1-2 last weekend, losing to Oklahoma State, 7-5, beating Loyola Marymount, 3-0, and losing to Minnesota, 8-4 ... The Wildcats are hitting .270 as a team with six home runs and 32 RBI ... On the mound Francis Brooke is 2-0 with a 0.44 ERA in two starts and four total appearances ... He was named the Big 10 Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
