LAKEWOOD, Calif. - The UNLV Rebels (17-9) concluded their stay at the Long Beach State Invitational on a good note with a 2-0 blanking of the Buffalo Bulls (7-12) Sunday afternoon from Mayfair Park. UNLV scored single runs in the first and second, while Jessica O'Connor (6-2) pitched her fourth complete game of the season.
UNLV began the first inning well with a lead-off double by Marissa Nichols, who was later joined on the base path when Paige Emerson and Jaci Hull were walked by Buffalo's Sharon Barr (6-7). Following a fielder's choice play at the plate, Kendall Fearn stepped up with the bases juiced and grounded out to short. Fearn's grounder allowed Emerson to score the first run of the game.
Laura Briones led off the second with a triple down the line in right. Erica Addison stepped up next and delivered a single through the left side that plated Briones for an insurance run and a 2-0 cushion.
Buffalo's left eight stranded on the day with four left in scoring position. The Bulls left a runner standing on third in the first and fifth innings when the final out was recorded in each frame.
O"Connor, who went 3-0 on the week, was touched for five hits. She struck out four and walked four, as well. Three of her strikeouts came against UB catcher Alyssa Ward.
Barr was saddled with the loss in 6.0 innings of work. She was touched for two runs on six hits. She struck out three and walked two.
