Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - Long Beach State broke open a tied game with five runs in the third inning and four in the fifth on its way to a 17-8 win over the UNLV baseball team on Friday night in non-conference action from Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
After spotting the Dirtbags a 3-0 first inning lead, the Rebels tied the game in the second thanks to RBI singles from Nolan Clark and Richie Jimenez, while R.J. Arnold added a sacrifice fly. But the Rebels would not get another run until the bottom of the ninth inning in falling to 13-7 on the season.
LBSU (8-8) quickly went back ahead with a five-run third to go up 8-3, and then put the game away with four runs in the fifth. The lead grew to 15-3 thanks to a three-run home run from Joey Terdoslavich in the top of the seventh, and LBSU added two more runs in the top of the ninth.
UNLV didn't go away quietly in the ninth, scoring five runs in the final inning. Jimenez began things by driving in two runs with a single down the right field line, giving him a team-high three RBI on the night. Jarred Frierson hit the Rebels' second sacrifice fly of the night, and Drew Beuerlein closed the scoring with a two-run blast over the right-center wall, his third of the year, all in the last four games.
Tanner Peters (2-1) took the loss for the Rebels, allowing eight runs, seven earned, off nine hits over four innings. Andrew Gagnon improved to 3-1 for the Dirtbags, as he scattered three runs off seven hits over six innings of action.
Coupled with the Rebels' loss to Cal State Northridge earlier this week, this marks just the second time this season that UNLV has lost back-to-back games, and the first time it happened was the first two games of the season.
UNLV and LBSU continue their series tomorrow, with the first pitch from Earl E. Wilson Stadium set for 2:00 p.m. (PT), and right-hander Stephen Singer is slated to get the start on the mound for the Rebels.
