Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - UNLV's offense was held in check all afternoon by Long Beach State pitching, as the Rebels lost 10-1 in a non-conference baseball matchup on a warm Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels fell to 13-8 overall on the year as LBSU starter Jake Thompson (2-0) gave up one unearned run on five hits in 7.2 innings of work, allowing the Dirtbags to improve to 9-8 overall. UNLV starter Stephen Singer (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits in five innings on the mound.
Long Beach State scored a run in the first and then added three more in the top of the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead, and the Dirtbags never looked back in collecting 12 hits on the afternoon to score their runs.
The Rebels had a great chance to score runs in the bottom of the second, when with two runners on Travis Feiner hit a deep fly ball to left field that was near the wall and the foul line. Dirtbag left fielder Brennan Metzger was running at full speed and made a sliding catch along the warning track to keep UNLV off the scoreboard. That was one of just three times in the game that the Rebels put more than one runner on, as Thompson was in control on the mound all afternoon and left with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
In that eighth inning the Rebels put runners on the corners to open the frame, but Thompson limited the damage by getting two outs and allowing just a single run before turning the game over to the bullpen. UNLV center fielder Jarred Frierson knocked in the run in the inning on a fielder's choice to second, and that would be the only run of the game for the Rebels.
Rebel catcher Nolan Clark had two hits on the afternoon and the Rebels were held to just six hits in the game.
UNLV and LBSU wrap up their series tomorrow, with the first pitch from Earl E. Wilson Stadium set for 1:00 p.m. (PT), and it wraps up a stretch in which the Rebels will have played 19 of their first 22 at home.
