Final Stats
NEW ORLEANS - UNLV's offense was held in check most of the game and Tulane used a three-run fifth inning to break things open as the Rebels lost, 10-2, on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Turchin Stadium.
UNLV senior Drew Beuerlein hit a two-out single in the top of the first, and from there the Rebels would not get another hit until the top of the eighth, when they used a pair of base knocks as part of a two-run inning. But it was too little, too late for UNLV, which dropped to 22-15 overall on the year, with Matt Hutchison (4-2) taking the loss as he gave up five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Tulane scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead, and then scored three times in the fifth on a solo home run by Blake Crohan and then a two-run double by Gunner Wright, making it a 5-0 lead. That would be all the run support that Wright would need on the mound, as he gave up just three hits and two runs over 7.2 innings of work in picking up the win and helping Tulane improve to 23-14.
Rebel catcher Nolan Clark singled and then Cash Thomas reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, putting runners on second and third for Hunter Beaty, who drove both home with a double to left center. That made the score 6-2 and ended the day for Wright, who was relieved by Nick Pepitone, and he got out of the inning by striking out Jarred Frierson.
The Green Wave responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final 10-2 score, the big blow in the inning a two-run home run by Rob Segedin, putting the game out of reach.
UNLV finished the afternoon with four hits compared to Tulane's 17 base hits, and neither team committed an error.
The Rebels will wrap up their nine-game road swing with a Mountain West Conference series at TCU, and that three-game set gets underway Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) in Fort Worth, Texas. UNLV is currently 4-2 on the road trip and had its five-game road winning streak snapped on Saturday by Tulane.
