UNLV Falls To New Mexico

April 3, 2010

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball was held in check offensively in the final of a three-game Mountain West Conference series against New Mexico, and the Rebels lost 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Lobo pitching got the Rebels to hit into four double plays on the afternoon, which limited their chances to score runs on a mostly sunny afternoon in front of 378 fans.

The Rebels are now 16-12 overall and 2-4 in league games, with starter Matt Hutchison taking the loss on the mound, giving up six runs on 10 hits in eight innings of work. The Lobos improved to 19-10 and 6-3 in conference play, with starter Willy Kesler (2-1) earning the win, as he gave up two runs on six hits in 7.1 innings on the mound.

After the Lobos went up 1-0 on a solo home run by Justin Howard in the first, the Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Bayardi led off the inning with a walk and then moved to third on a double down the line off the bat of Travis Feiner, putting runners on second and third with one out. Bayardi came home on a ground out by R.J. Arnold, but that would be the only run of the inning for the Rebels as Duncan Satherlie flew out to end the inning.

New Mexico retook the lead in the top of the third with three runs, jumping out to a 4-1 lead, with Howard doubling in a run during the frame, and the Lobos added another run in the top of the fourth.

UNLV picked up its second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Arnold doubling with one out and then later scoring on Richie Jimenez's infield single, making the score 5-2. That would be the final run of the game for the Rebels, and the Lobos tacked on another run in the top of the eighth.

UNLV remains at home but will take a break from conference play, hosting Texas Tech in a two-game series that gets underway Monday night at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
