LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball fell behind early and its pitching let the game get out of hand, dropping a Mountain West Conference tilt to Utah, 25-5, on Saturday afternoon at a sunny and warm Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels committed four errors in the first two innings, including three in the second, which lead to seven unearned runs for Utah, which jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back in earning the win. UNLV fell to 27-22 overall and 11-9 in league games while the Utes moved to 20-25 and 8-12 in league games, and they snapped an eight-game losing streak.
UNLV junior Drew Beuerlein temporarily tied the game in the bottom of the first, hitting a two-run home run to right field that knotted things at two, but from there it was all Utah. A six-run second snapped the tie, and the Utes would score runs in every inning but one, including an eight-run outburst in the sixth.
Rebel starter Matt Hutchison (5-4) took the loss, as he gave up eight runs but just one earned, on seven hits as he was only able to get four outs before turning the game over to the bullpen. Utah starter Andrew Wilding (4-2) benefitted from the run support, earning the win as he allowed five runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Beuerlein finished the game with three RBI and Hunter Beaty scored twice for the Rebels, who ended the game with six hits. UNLV also committed a season-high five errors on the day.
Utah pounded out 21 hits on the afternoon, including a pair of grand slams, one that came off the bat of C.J. Cron, who drove in eight runs and scored four times. The Utes had two players score five runs each while Nik Gumeson hit two home runs and drove in six runs as well.
UNLV and Utah wrap up their series Sunday, with the first pitch at Earl E. Wilson Stadium set for 1:00 p.m. (PT) and before the game the Rebels will honor six seniors who are wrapping up their careers wearing the Scarlet and Gray.
