Final Stats
LAS VEGAS - UNLV baseball dropped the final home game of its 2010 season, losing to Cal State Northridge 11-8 in a non-conference tilt Tuesday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium as the Rebels fell behind early and could not come back.
UNLV is now 27-24 overall on the year, with starter Stephen Singer (1-7) taking the loss, giving up seven runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. CSUN improved to 25-23 and Ryan Juarez (3-6) picked up the win, working a scoreless inning of relief.
The Matadors jumped out to an early lead on a three-run home run to right field by Ryan Pineda, and it was an advantage the Rebels could not overcome, although they would close to within a run twice.
Drew Beuerlein's RBI double in the first gave UNLV its first run and in the second R.J. Arnold led off with a single and would eventually score on a wild pitch, making it 3-2. After CSUN scored a run in the fourth, the Rebels answered in their half of the frame, loading the bases and then getting a run on Cash Thomas' sacrifice fly to center field.
Cal State Northridge blew open a close game in the fifth, loading the bases with one out and ending Singer's day, as UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith brought in Jared Lee out of the bullpen. Dominic D'Anna greeted him with a bases-clearing double to left field, and he would later score on an error, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Northridge pushed another run across the plate in the top of the sixth before UNLV posted three runs after the seventh-inning stretch to get back to within three at 9-6. With two outs in the inning, Jarred Frierson and Beuerlein singled, putting runners on the corners, and then Frierson scored on a passed ball. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases and Arnold followed with a sharp single up the middle that scored two.
The teams would each score two runs in the ninth, with the Matadors using a single and then two triples to score a pair of runs while Brandon Bayardi and Kyle Kretchmer hit back-to-back solo home runs for the Rebels.
UNLV collected 13 hits on the afternoon, with Arnold getting three base knocks in five trips to the plate. CSUN had 14 hits, with three different players each getting three hits.
The Rebels will now close out their regular season and Mountain West Conference schedule, traveling to play a three-game series at San Diego State beginning Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. (PT).
