Final Stats
SAN DIEGO - The UNLV baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but only sent two runners across home plate the rest of the way as it lost 12-6 to San Diego State Friday night in the second game of its three-game series at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The score was tied 5-5 after three innings, but the Aztecs scored one in the fourth, three in the sixth and three in the eighth. With the loss, UNLV dropped to 27-26 overall and 11-12 in the Mountain West Conference. SDSU improved to 27-26 and 12-11 in league play with the win.
Drew Beuerlein's single in the top of the first inning drove in two runs, then Brandon Bayardi hit his ninth home run of the season - a two-run shot. Nolan Clark's sacrifice fly drove in the run in the third and UNLV's only other run of the game was in the seventh which was scored by Kyle Kretchmer's sacrifice fly. The Rebels recorded 11 hits, but had four errors on the night. Beuerlein was 3-for-5 for the game. Bayardi and Jarred Frierson each added two hits for UNLV.
The Aztecs scored 12 runs on 19 hits, just one of which was for extra bases - a double by Mitch Blackburn that scored one run in the second inning. Blackburn was 5-for-6 on the night with four RBI. Blair Moore was 4-for-5 with two RBI.
Steven Moranda was credited with the win for SDSU after pitching the first four innings. He gave up five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Matt Hutchinson started on the mound for the Rebels and pitched 2.2 innings, but Chad Nading took the loss.
The Rebels and Aztecs will play the final game of their three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. The MWC Tournament will begin Tuesday and is being hosted by SDSU.
