Brent Guy Hired As Linebackers Coach

June 16, 2010

LAS VEGAS - UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck on Wednesday announced the hiring of veteran football man Brent Guy as the Rebels linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Guy, who spent last season as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Louisville, completes UNLV's 2010 staff.

"Brent Guy brings a tremendous amount of experience on the defensive side of the ball, particularly at the linebacker position," Hauck said. "He is also a natural fit to recruit the Dallas area. We are excited for Brent to join us and expect him to make a smooth transition to our staff even though we are late in the football calendar."

Before joining the Cardinals, Guy spent four years as head coach of Utah State where he faced the Rebels three times (2005, '07, '08) and produced 14 players that earned first- or second-team All-WAC honors, including 2006 WAC Freshman of the Year, linebacker Paul Igboeli.

Guy went to Utah State from Arizona State where he was the defensive coordinator for four years. In 2004, ASU went 9-3 and defeated Purdue in the Sun Bowl, marking the Sun Devils' second bowl appearance in three years. ASU's defense finished 2004 ranked 28th nationally in rushing defense, 32nd in pass efficiency defense and 48th in both total and scoring defense.

In 2002, Guy's ASU defense forced 40 turnovers, including 22 interceptions and recorded 123 tackles for loss, including 52 sacks. The Sun Devils featured Terrell Suggs, who set the NCAA record for sacks that season with 24 and was recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Award (nation's top defensive player) and Lombardi Trophy (nation's top lineman).

Before moving to Tempe, Guy was the defensive coordinator at new Mountain West Conference member Boise State from 1998-2000, helping the Broncos to two Big West Conference championships. Under his guidance, the Broncos led the league in total defense, rushing defense and scoring defense in 1999 and 2000.

Guy, who has been a part of nine bowl teams in his playing and coaching career, had two stints coaching at his alma mater Oklahoma State. After serving as a graduate assistant (1986-87) and recruiting coordinator (1988) there, Guy coached the Cowboy linebackers from 1989-91 and then again from 1995-97.

During his first stint at Utah State in 1992-94, working with the linebackers, the Aggies won a Big West Conference Championship and posted the only bowl victory in school history, winning the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl, 42-33 over Ball State.

Guy began his playing career at Oklahoma State as a walk-on and became a starter at both defensive end and linebacker. He graduated from OSU with a degree in hotel and restaurant administration in 1983. He and his wife, Shawn, have two children, Madison and Riley.
