CAMP REBEL, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV junior Phillip Payne was one of two Mountain West Conference players and 51 from across the nation selected to the official Watch List for the 2010 Biletnikoff Award, which annually goes to college football's the top wide receiver.
Payne (6-3, 205) is a Las Vegas native who graduated from Western High School and was the only Rebel voted to this year's official Preseason All-MWC Team late last month.
He joins San Diego State's senior receiver Vincent Brown on this year's Biletnikoff list, which was released by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.
Payne already has 14 total receiving touchdowns after just 21 games played and was ranked by Phil Steele's magazine as college football's No. 29 receiver overall heading into the fall. Last season he finished with 58 catches for 661 yards and seven scores while ranking fifth in the MWC in receptions per game (4.83) and sixth in yards per game (55.1).
The winner of the Biletnikoff Award will be announced on ESPN on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 9. The award will be officially presented to the winner at the annual Biletnikoff Award Presentation Banquet on Feb. 11, 2011.
The award is named for Fred Biletnikoff, the Florida State University All-America receiver and a Pro-Football Hall of Famer. The award has been given out for the past 15 years.
