The QB Question

Aug. 20, 2010

CAMP REBEL (UNLVRebels.com) - With Camp Rebel just one Saturday scrimmage away from ending, the question of who will be UNLV's starting quarterback in the September 4 opener vs. Wisconsin has still not been answered.

While senior incumbent Omar Clayton (Normal, IL/Normal Community High Schoo) and junior Mike Clausen (Riverside, CA/North HS) have been taking the majority of snaps as of late, head coach Bobby Hauck said nothing has been decided.

Hauck said he and his staff will review the charts and video on Sunday and Monday while the team is off to get a better gauge, but there is no set timetable to name the starter under center.

"The sooner the better," said Hauck. "If after Sunday and Monday we have the ability to name a starter we will. And if we need to keep going (evaluating into next week's practice schedule), we will."

New offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rob Phenicie said Friday that he was looking forward to getting in to gameplanning with his group of four quarterbacks.

"They far exceeded my expectations (during camp) in terms of learning what we're doing and what needs to be done. We are having good meetings with lots of questions and discussion."

UNLVRebels.com asked Phenicie to give a mini-review each of his four quarterbacks as camp comes to a close:

Omar Clayton, SR-3L "Speedy. Did a great job working his feet this camp."

Mike Clausen, JR-2L "Very competitive. Physical runner."

Caleb Herring, FR-RS "A gifted and still very young quarterback with a bright future. He'll push the other two (veterans)."

Taylor Barnhill, FR-HS "Did a good job in camp. I would say he is further along than any true freshman I've had as far as getting in and doing things."
