CAMP REBEL (UNLVRebels.com) - The first Camp Rebel under new head coach Bobby Hauck came to a close Saturday morning after a short, scripted team scrimmage.
After checking in with the media on hand, the players, coaches and staff quickly changed, ate lunch and got on busses headed back home to Las Vegas.
The scrimmage was designed to be nothing fancy and it showed as the Rebels concentrated on the run game and stopping the run game through an exact number of scripted plays.
The day's only touchdown came on a pass from redshirt freshman Caleb Herring (Moreno Valley, CA/Citrus Hil HS) to senior wideout Tate Knutson (Anchorage, AK/East HS).
Don't count Hauck as being disappointed, however.
"If I was to describe our team right now, in a word -- tired," he said. "We are fatigued as a football team. We wanted to see live blocking and live tackling, we obviously emphasized that. We had a prescribed number of plays today and got in and got out clean, except for (offensive lineman Shane) Watterson (Saugus, CA/Saugus HS) getting hurt and hopefully he's okay.
"Overall, I am impressed with our team through a tough training camp. I would like to thank the wonderful people of Ely for embracing us for nearly two weeks. Also, I thank them every day but I want to say another thanks to all of our support staff, who always do such a great job, and especially when we go on the road like this."
The team will enjoy a well-deserved couple of days off. Classes begin at UNLV on Monday and the players will be back on the field at Rebel Park starting Tuesday from approximately 4-6:30 p.m. through Friday. All practices are open to the public.
