LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - An impressive total of 10 teams that were ranked at the end of last season appear on the UNLV women's tennis 2010-11 schedule, which was released by the school Thursday.
"This year's schedule again sees us playing against some of the top programs in college tennis," UNLV 12th-year head coach Kevin Cory said. "In addition to a very challenging non-conference schedule, the Mountain West Conference continues improving, so we'll have our hands full this season."
After participating in a trio of individual tournaments in the fall, including for the first time hosting the USTA ITA Mountain Regional at the Fertitta Tennis Complex from Oct. 13-17, the program hosts the annual Freeman Memorial Invitational on Jan. 14-16, 2011. A collection of singles and doubles players from top programs Stanford, Florida, USC, UCLA, Arizona State, North Carolina and Oregon are scheduled to battle UNLV's contingent.
The dual-match campaign gets underway by hosting New Mexico State on January 21. After the opening weekend, the Lady Rebels, who finished last season ranked 30th, will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament. The third-year, 64-team event will have host sites around the nation and UNLV will be paired first with Oklahoma (ranked 42nd in last season's final poll) and then against either Cal Poly (63rd) or defending national champion and host Stanford.
Other non-conference highlights include a trip to Fresno State on March 4 and tussle the following day with Florida International (54th). Visiting Fertitta this season will be teams such as Boise State (38th) on March 11, followed that weekend by SMU (29th) and Furman. Cory's former employer, Ole Miss (17th), comes to town for the first time ever on March 16.
The Lady Rebels will open league play with a match vs. Wyoming (73rd) on April 1, followed by a contest vs. Colorado State on April 2. An early Senior Day will then close the home schedule on April 3 vs. Air Force.
UNLV then travels to Albuquerque to take on defending league tournament champion TCU (50th) on April 9 and face New Mexico one day later. The Lady Rebels play Utah (40th) on April 15 and BYU one day later for the final time as conference mates while the regular-season wraps up at San Diego State (57th) on April 17.
For the second time in history, Fort Collins, Colo., will be the site of the league's championship event from April 27-30. The NCAA regionals are scheduled for May 13-14 and the round of 16 and individual national tournaments will take place in Palo Alto, Calif., from May 19-30.
