LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - It was unusually hot in the desert for late September on Friday and so were, it turns out, the hosts at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
In fact, Lady Rebel players went undefeated in 10 singles matches and added a 3-1 doubles mark at the annual UNLV Women's Tennis Fall Invitational, which includes players from Texas, Illinois, Illinois State and Northern Arizona.
"We had a great day against players from some nationally ranked teams," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "For us to win every singles match was a great start and sets us up for some competitive matches this weekend."
In Flight One action, UNLV senior Jana Albers, ranked No. 72 in the nation, downed Misia Kedzierski of Illinois, 6-1, 7-6, and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over NAU's Edit Suhajda.
Two Rebel freshmen also swept their matches during their collegiate debuts. Lucia Batta downed Yumi Hasegawa of NAU 6-1, 6-1 and then got by Maggie Mello of Texas 6-2, 6-2. Aleksandra Josifoska won 6-2, 6-1 over Carolina Abello of Illinois State and then 6-3, 6-0 over Elizabeth Begley of Texas. Josifoska will now face her teammate Albers in Saturday's semifinals.
In the second flight, Nives Pavlovic downed Gabby Phillips of Illinois State 6-2, 6-2. Flight Two saw Adrienn Hidvegi win 6-0, 6-1 over Ashton Nisbet of Illinois State and Anna Maskaljun advance by default. Rumyana Terzieva won 6-2, 6-2 over Heather Nisbett of ISU in Flight Four.
In doubles, Pavlovic and Josifoska advanced in the top flight with an 8-2 win.
Action begins on Saturday with doubles semifinals at 10 a.m. Finals are scheduled for Sunday. All matches are free and open to the public.
