Rebels Suffer Hard-Fought Loss

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (1-4) suffered a hard-fought, 3-1 loss to the Oregon State Beavers (3-3) Saturday afternoon in the Active Ankle Challenge in Corvallis, Ore. UNLV lost by set scores of 19-25, 28-30, 25-21, 22-25. The match featured 46 ties and 21 lead changes.

UNLV was out-hit .275 to .179 in the match and threw down eight less kills (54-to-62) and committed eight more hitting errors (28-to-20). The Rebels' best hitting occurred during their third-set win, as they connected for a .286 hitting efficiency. They stayed in the .200 range in the second and fourth frames with .204 and .212 averages, respectively. The opening stanza was not a good one with the team hitting -.036.

Oregon State, on the other hand, hit no worse than .220 in the contest. They hit a team-best .371 in the decisive fourth set. The Beavers opened with a .233 before improving to .277 in the second. They had their lowest effort in the third with a .220 average.

The Beavers took a quick 1-0 lead in the match after running away with the first set nearly from the start. The two squads played to a 3-3 tie before OSU built at least a five-point cushion through much of the set. They owned as much as a 12-point lead at the 21-9 mark.

The second set turned into a marathon with the Beavers claiming the stanza with a 30-28 score. UNLV fell behind early, but knotted things up at 7-all before going up by seven at the 18-11 juncture. OSU began a comeback that saw them catch up and pull even at the 21-21 juncture. The teams then managed to tie things up seven more times before the Beavers scored the final two points. The Rebels had four set-point opportunities, but were unable to capitalize before OSU was successful on its second try.

The Rebels came out of intermission ready to get back into the match and they did just that with the 25-21 win to pull within one set. The frame featured 16 ties and seven lead changes, as neither team was able to put any distance between one another until OSU went ahead by three at 17-14. UNLV countered by winning eight of the final 12 points to turn the frame in its favor.

The fourth and final set was just as tightly contest as the third with 17 ties and seven lead changes. The two kept things close near the end. UNLV held a one-point lead at 21-20, but then witnessed OSU rattle off four straight points to stake itself to a 24-21 advantage. The Rebels pulled within two at 24-22 before the Beavers captured the set 25-22.

Sekola Falemaka led UNLV with her first career double-double, as she paired 14 kills with a career-best 13 digs.

Sara Nehf had a team-high 17 kills and added five digs, as well.

Kelsey Keeler and Madeline Westman both came one kill shy of reaching double figures with each throwing down nine.

Amanda Alles dished out a team-high 40 assists and chipped in six digs and two kills.

Kela Lau Hee had a match-high 16 digs and was joined in double digits by Falemaka (13 digs) and Nile Te'o (11 digs).

OSU's Megan McBride notched a double-double of her own with a match-high 44 assists and 10 digs. McBride also added five kills and four assisted blocks.

Jill Sawatzky fell two digs shy of a double-double with eight, although she did manage to amass a match-high 18 kills. Sawatzky wasn't the only Beaver to tally double-digit kills, as Camille Sexton and Mona Kressl had 14 and 10, respectively.

UNLV returns to action Saturday with a 5:00 pm affair against Florida Gulf Coast.
