LAS VEGAS - With a pair of its starters sitting out the tournament, UNLV's contingent had a tough first day at the ninth annual Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Senior Adrienn Hidvegi was the only Lady Rebel to win a singles match in the main draw as she outlasted Arizona State's Ashlee Brown 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 in the first round. Hidvegi was then defeated by top seed and third-ranked Maria Sanchez from USC, 6-2, 6-4. In Flight Two, sophomore Ella Bourchier won her lone match, 6-3, 6-3 over Stanford's Elizabeth Ecker, to advance.
In doubles play, UNLV still has one duo alive in the main draw as Nives Pavlovic and Anna Maskaljun doubled up Cristala Andrews and Hayley Miller of USC, 8-4.
Players from eight of the elite college programs in the United States have gathered on campus for what is one of the game's top individual tournaments each season. Action begins with doubles each day at 10 a.m. PST with the finals scheduled for Sunday. Admission to all matches is free.
