LAS VEGAS - The 29th-ranked UNLV women's tennis team did just enough Sunday to stay undefeated on the young season, nipping former Big West Conference rival Pacific 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Lady Rebels (3-0) began the morning by dropping the doubles point to the Tigers (1-2). The only UNLV duo to win was Rumyana Terzieva and Ella Bourchier, 8-4, at the third position.
The hosts were faced with having to win four of the six singles matches and did just that. UOP took straight-setters at the top and the bottom of the lineup but UNLV got points from Jana Albers, 6-4, 6-0 over Julia Hansen at No. 2; Anna Maskaljun, 6-0, 6-4 over Olga Gumenyuk at No. 4; and Terzieva, 6-3, 6-0 over Susan Te at No. 5. The team match came down to the day's only three-setter and senior Adrienn Hidvegi fought off Shabby Eslami at the third spot by the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch it.
"It's nice to get through this first weekend at 3-0," said UNLV head coach Kevin Cory. "We've had a rough week with three players battling the flu and we look forward to getting back to full strength in time for a couple of big matches next weekend.
Next up, UNLV travels to Palo Alto, Calif., for its annual appearance in the ITA Kickoff Weekend Playoff, which is staged at campus sites across the nation. The Lady Rebels open on Friday against Oklahoma while host Stanford will take on Cal Poly in the first round.
