2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Eight
FIRST SERVE: The UNLV Rebels close out the first half of Mountain West action this week with home matches against the Boise State Broncos and Air Force Falcons. UNLV welcomes Boise State to Las Vegas for a match Thursday night at 7:00 pm. Air Force comes to town two days later on Saturday when the Rebels host their "Dig Pink®" match at 1:00 pm.
"DIG PINK" MATCH SET FOR SATURDAY: The UNLV volleyball program and thousands of teams from around the country will be participating in The Side-Out Foundation's Dig Pink® National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally this season. The Rebels will do their part on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host the Air Force Falcons in the Cox Pavilion at 1:00 pm.
Dig Pink® events give spectators the opportunity to become involved in making donations to the cause and by pinking out the events (i.e. donning pink to show their support). Admission will be $2.00 for all fans.
The Rebels have actively been collecting donations before they celebrate the event Saturday afternoon when they will don pink warm-ups before changing into pink jerseys for the match
Throughout the country high school and college teams will promote breast health education in the community as well as raise funds to further research.
ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels hit the road for two matches next week with both taking place in the Golden State. UNLV will open up the second half of Mountain West play with a visit to "America's Finest City" to face the San Diego State Aztecs on TV Friday, Oct. 21 (6:00 pm). The Rebels then jump out of conference action with a trip to Bakersfield, Calif., to square off against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday, Oct. 22 (5:00 pm).
REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels split their two matches on the road last week in Mountain West play. UNLV suffered a 3-0 loss to New Mexico before it rebounded with a 3-1 win against TCU.
The Rebels had five players notch 10 or more kills with Makenzie Moea'i's 23 leading the squad. Daryn Glenn was second with 15, while Candice Thomas and Sekola Falemaka threw down 13 apiece. Madeline Westman rounded out the quintet with 10 kills.
Stephanie Thelen led the team in assists with 68 besides adding 13 digs, eight kills, five blocks (one solo) and one ace.
Defensively, six Rebels notched double digits in digs with Allison Davies (23) and Falemaka topping the six pack. Glenn added 16 to Thelen's 13, while Layne Wilson (11) and Taylor Richard (10) joined the grouping.
At the net, Westman led all blockers with six (two solo), while Thelen was second with five.
SMALL-SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will appear on television once during the 2011 regular season. UNLV's contest at San Diego State on Oct. 21 will be aired live on The Mtn. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm from Peterson Gym.
THEY'RE GOING THE DISTANCE: The UNLV Rebels have played 18 matches, thus far this season with eight, which ties a program high, of those going to five sets. UNLV owns a 4-4 mark in marathon matches. The Rebels started off 3-0 with consecutive wins over Morehead State (Sept. 2), Northwestern State (Sept. 3) and Southern Utah (Sept. 9), but have only won one of their last five. They lost to Cal State Northridge (Sept. 10) and
