Broncos Gallop Past Rebels Thursday Night

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (9-10 overall, 2-4 Mountain West) succumbed to the Boise State Broncos (12-9, 3-3) by a 3-2 score Thursday night in Mountain West volleyball action at the Cox Pavilion. Coincidentally, the match was the ninth played by UNLV this season, which broke the previous program high of eight set in 2004, '05 and '10. Unfortunately, the Rebels were unsuccessful in picking up their fifth win in marathon matches this season, as Boise State claimed the affair with set scores of 25-18, 19-25, 33-31, 20-25 and 15-9.

UNLV out-hit BSU .185 to .169 and threw down six more kills in the same amount of swings (189), but committed three more errors. The Rebels hit between .105 (first set) and .263 (second) the entire contest, while the Broncos topped out with a .412 effort in the fifth after staying in a range of .025 (fourth) and .250 (first).

The match featured a total of 27 ties and 12 lead changes with the majority of the two coming in the third and fourth sets. The teams knotted the score on 13 occasions in the third and swapped the lead four times, while the fourth had more lead changes (six) and fewer ties (10). The first two frames were decided by the midway point, while the fifth was the Broncos from the first point.

UNLV was led by Stephanie Thelen's seventh double-double of the season. Thelen coupled 52 assists with 12 digs to achieve the feat, while chipping in five assisted blocks and two kills.

The Rebels had a trio of players throw down double digits in kills. Madeline Westman led the squad in kills (16) and hitting efficiency (.394). Westman also provided four assisted blocks, three digs and an ace.

Makenzie Moea'i and Candice Thomas had 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Moea'i added three blocks (one solo) and two digs to Thomas' career/season-high eight blocks, one dig and one assist.

Defensively, the Rebels had four players notch 10 or more digs with Allison Davies' 25 leading the team. Sekola Falemaka owned the second-most with 16, while adding nine kills, two assisted blocks and two assists. Daryn Glenn had 10 digs of her own, besides her nine kills, two assists and one assisted block.

The Broncos were led by a triple-double from Breann Nesselhuff, who had 24 assists, 19 digs and 10 kills on .320 hitting. Leah Stevens led her squad in kills with 13. Casey Rose split setting duties with Nesselhuff and had a team-high 26 assists. Amanda Remy tied Davies for the match high in digs with 25.

UNLV returns to action Saturday afternoon for its "Dig Pink®" match against the Air Force Falcons at 1:00 pm. The Rebels and thousands of teams from around the country are participating in The Side-Out Foundation's Dig Pink® National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally this season. The event gives spectators the opportunity to become involved in making donations to the cause and by pinking out the events. UNLV will do its part by wearing pink warm-ups before changing into pink jerseys for the match. Admission is $2.00 for all fans.
