2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Nine

FIRST SERVE: The UNLV Rebels open up the second half of the Mountain West season Friday night with a televised, road contest against the San Diego State Aztecs. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 pm first serve and will be aired live on The Mtn. Following the match, UNLV will travel to Bakersfield, Calif., and square off against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Saturday at 5:00 pm.

ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels stay on the road for a swing to the Rocky Mountains with trips to Laramie, Wyo., and Fort Collins, Colo. UNLV opens the trip up with a match against the Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday, Oct. 27 (7:00 pm MT/6:00 pm PT). Afterwards, the Rebels head south to face the Colorado State Rams on Saturday, Oct. 29 (1:00 pm MT/12:00 pm PT).

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels split their two matches at home last week in Mountain West play. UNLV suffered a 3-2 loss to Boise State before a 3-0 sweep of Air Force.

The Rebels had four players notch 10 or more kills with Makenzie Moea'i and Madeline Westman leading the team with 26 and 24, respectively. Candice Thomas (19 kills) and Sekola Falemaka (11) round out the quartet.

Stephanie Thelen led the team in assists with 81 on the week. Thelen averaged 10.12 assists per set.

Defensively, six Rebels notched double digits in digs with Allison Davies (37) leading the way. Davies had 25 of those in the loss to Boise State. Falemaka had 20 digs, while Thelen had 18. Layne Wilson (15), Daryn Glenn (12) and Taylor Richard (10) rounded out the six pack of Rebels.

At the net, Thomas had 15 total blocks with three coming as solo efforts. She had eight (three solo) against Boise State.

FREDRICK NEARING A MILESTONE: UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick will coach her 799th and 800th career matches this weekend against San Diego State and Cal State Bakersfield, respectively. Fredrick, who is in her 25th season as a head coach, has led five programs at either the NCAA Division I or II level and has been named a conference coach of the year twice and a region coach of the year once.

Fredrick spent the majority of her time at Washington State University (1989-2003) where she coached 470 matches in 15 years. She began her head coaching career at Weber State University (1985-88) before moving on to coach Washington State. She then had two stops in the Hawkeye State with four years (2004-07) at the University of Iowa and one (2010) at Luther College. She has coached a total of 308 matches at Weber State, Iowa and Luther.

Fredrick was hired at UNLV in Dec. 2010 and has since led the team to a 10-10 overall mark with a 3-4 showing in Mountain West action.

SMALL-SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will appear on television once during the 2011 regular season. UNLV's contest at San Diego State on Oct. 21 will be aired live on The Mtn. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm from Peterson Gym.

THEY'RE GOING THE DISTANCE: The UNLV Rebels have played 20 matches, thus far this season with nine going to five sets. The nine five-setters are a program high and surpassed the previous mark set three times (2003, '05 and '10).

UNLV owns a 4-5 mark in marathon matches and started the year off 3-0 before dropping five of its last six. The Rebels reeled off wins against Morehead State (Sept. 2), Northwestern State (Sept. 3) and Southern Utah (Sept. 9) early in the season. They lost their first five-setter to Cal State Northridge (Sept. 10) before they regrouped with a win over Fresno State (Sept. 16). Since then, the squad has lost four straight, three of which have been to Mountain West foes.
