Results

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Five of UNLV's eight singles entries and half of its four doubles teams are still alive after the first day of action at the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Men's Tennis Championships, which are being held at the Darling Tennis Center.

Johannes Markel won 7-6, 6-3 over Montana State's Niklas Brandes; Rene Ruegamer won 6-2, 6-2 over Ethan Vaughn of Montana, Alex Bull defeated Felipe Frattini of New Mexico State 6-1, 6-2; Tamas Batyi downed Mike Facey of Montana 6-4, 6-4; and Bernard Schoeman got by Filip Fichtel of Idaho 6-2, 7-6.

In doubles, Batyi teamed up with Brian Kenyon to nip Andrew Whiting and Lenny Whiting of Utah State, 9-8, and Bull and Ruegamer outlasted Carlos Bermudez and Mario Urquidi of Arizona 9-7.

The tournament runs through Sunday. More than 100 men's collegiate tennis players are competing as one of the 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
