Oct. 25, 2011

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -

2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Ten

FIRST SERVE: The UNLV Rebels will stay on the road this week when they head to the Rocky Mountains for two Mountain West matches. UNLV opens up action with a Thursday night (Oct. 27) tussle with the Wyoming Cowgirls in Laramie, Wyo., at 7:00 pm MT (6:00 pm PT). Following that match, the Rebels head south for a tilt with the 25th-ranked Colorado State Rams on Saturday (Oct. 29) at 1:00 pm MT (12:00 pm PT).

ON THE SIDELINES: After two weeks of playing on the road, the UNLV Rebels return home to the friendly confines of the Cox Pavilion for two Mountain West matches. Coincidentally, the contests will be the final home events for UNLV this season. The Rebels will welcome the TCU Horned Frogs to town on Nov. 3 (7:00 pm) prior to a visit from the New Mexico Lobos on Nov. 5 (1:00 pm).

REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels split their two matches on the road last week. UNLV dropped a 3-1 decision at San Diego State to open the second half of Mountain West action, but rallied for a 3-2, come-from-behind win at CSU Bakersfield in non-conference play.

The Rebels had a quartet of players notch 10 or more kills last week. Sekola Falemaka led the team with 24 kills and was the only hitter to tally double figures in both matches with 14 and 10, respectively. Candice Thomas registered 21 with 17, which tied a career high, coming against CSUB. Makenzie Moea'i (20) and Madeline Westman (18) rounded out the foursome.

Helping the hitters out was Stephanie Thelen, who had 75 assists. Thelen also chipped in 14 digs, nine of which came in the CSUB contest.

On the defensive side of the ball, five Rebels amassed double digits in digs. Allison Davies led the team with 47 and had a season/career-high 26 come against SDSU. Falemaka added 20, while Layne Wilson (15), Thelen (14) and Daryn Glenn (10) joined the group.

At the net, Thomas and Westman had eight blocks apiece. Thomas had one solo and seven assisted putbacks, while Westman's were two and six, respectively.

FREDRICK COACHED HER 800TH: UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick, who is 11-11 on the year, coached her 800th-career match last Saturday against CSU Bakersfield. Fredrick, who is in her 25th season as a head coach, has led five programs at either the NCAA Division I or II level and has been named a conference coach of the year twice and a region coach of the year once.

Fredrick spent the majority of her time at Washington State University (1989-2003) where she coached 470 matches in 15 years. She began her head coaching career at Weber State University (1985-88) before moving on to coach Washington State. She then had two stops in the Hawkeye State with four years (2004-07) at the University of Iowa and one (2010) at Luther College. She has coached a total of 308 matches at Weber State, Iowa and Luther.

THEY'RE GOING THE DISTANCE: The UNLV Rebels have played 22 matches, thus far this season with 10 going to five sets. The 10 five-setters are a program high and surpassed the previous mark set three times (2003, '05 and '10).

UNLV owns a 5-5 mark in marathon matches and started the year off 3-0 before dropping five of its last seven. The Rebels reeled off wins against Morehead State (Sept. 2), Northwestern State (Sept. 3) and Southern Utah (Sept. 9) early in the season. They lost their first five-setter to Cal State Northridge (Sept. 10) before they regrouped with a win over Fresno State (Sept. 16). Following that match, the squad lost four straight before rebounding with a thrilling, come-from-behind win over CSU Bakersfield (Oct. 23) to even its record at 5-5 on the year.
