LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV sophomore Tamas Batyi won twice in singles on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Larry Easley Memorial Classic, which is being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Batyi first got by Ryan Cheung of UC Irvine 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 and then defeated Zach Leslie of Fresno State, 7-5, retired.
Host UNLV also has one doubles team still alive in the main draw as Bernard Schoeman and Rene Ruegamer nipped Derek Siddiqui and Jose Sierra Short of San Diego State, 9-7, to move into Saturday's quarterfinals.
"We saw a lot of positives today but had a couple of players battling injuries," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "Overall, it was a solid first day and we're looking forward to having more chances to improve this weekend."
Players from eight other programs are competing in the individual event: Arkansas, Auburn, Fresno State, UC Irvine, Utah, San Diego State, New Mexico and NAU.
The annual tournament was renamed last year in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
