2011 Volleyball Notes - Week Seven
FIRST SERVE: After playing their last three matches at home, all of which were against Mountain West opponents, the UNLV Rebels hit the road for a two-match excursion through the eastern portion of the conference. UNLV opens up the week with a match Thursday evening in Albuquerque against the New Mexico Lobos (7:00 pm MT/6:00 pm PT). The Rebels then head east to Fort Worth for a Saturday matinee with the TCU Horned Frogs (1:00 pm CT/11:00 am PT).
ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels return home to the friendly confines of the Cox Pavilion for a pair of conference matches next week when the Boise State Broncos and Air Force Falcons come to town. Boise State will be making its first trip to Las Vegas as a member of the Mountain West on Thursday, Oct. 13 (7:00 pm). Air Force will face the Rebels two days later on Saturday, Oct. 15 (1:00 pm).
REBEL REWIND: The UNLV Rebels lost both of their matches by 3-2 scores last week at home to then-#21 Colorado State and Wyoming.
UNLV was by a trio of players with 20 or more combined kills in the two matches. Daryn Glenn led the squad with a 2.70 kills-per-set average and 27 kills, which included a career/season-high 21 vs. Colorado State. Glenn also provided 18 digs, 10 assists, six blocks (one solo) and one ace.
Makenzie Moea'i and Madeline Westman rounded out the three attackers with 21 and 20 kills, respectively. Moea'i had nine digs, two blocks and an assist to go along with her kill figure, while Westman added seven blocks (one solo), five digs, two assists and two aces.
Stephanie Thelen racked up her fifth and sixth double-doubles on the year with 42 assists and 11 digs vs. CSU and 37 assists and 15 digs against Wyoming. Overall, she had 79 assists, 26 digs, 15 kills and three aces, as well. She threw down a career/season-high nine kills against Wyoming.
Four players had 23 or more digs with Allison Davies leading the quartet with 35 of her own. She was followed by Thelen's 26 and 23 each from Sekola Falemaka and Layne Wilson.
At the net, four had five or more blocks in the matches. Candice Thomas topped all with nine (two solo). Westman was second with seven. Glenn (six) and Falemaka (five) rounded out the foursome.
SMALL-SCREEN REBELS: The UNLV Rebels will appear on television once during the 2011 regular season. UNLV's contest at San Diego State on Oct. 21 will be aired live on The Mtn. First serve is slated for 6:00 pm from Peterson Gym.
