Rebels Two-Step Past TCU In Fort Worth

Oct. 8, 2011

Final Stats

FORT WORTH (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (9-9 overall, 2-3 Mountain West) knocked off the TCU Horned Frogs (16-3, 3-2) by a 3-1 score Saturday afternoon at the University Rec Center. UNLV was led by double-doubles from Daryn Glenn and Sekola Falemaka, who both had big days on each side of the net for the Rebels. The teams split the first two sets before intermission, but UNLV managed to take the second and third frames for the victory by set scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14.

The two squads had very similar hitting figures on the day. UNLV out-hit TCU .248 to .222 and owned four more kills (56-52) on four fewer swings (149-153), although they committed one more error (19-18) than their opponent. The Rebels hit in the .200s all day and topped out with a .286 effort in the fourth and final frame. TCU, on the other hand, hit .143 or better in three stanzas, but recorded a paltry .059 output in the fourth.

"This is probably one of our best overall performances from the team," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our serving made a big difference. We were able to keep the ball away from their middles, which we wanted to do, and our serving helped us do that."

The match featured 26 ties and 10 lead changes with the second and third sets owning the majority of both categories, 21 and eight, respectively.

The double-doubles were the fourth overall for both Glenn and Falemaka on the year. They had 11 kills apiece, while former had a match-high 18 digs to the latter's 15. Falemaka also contributed three assists and two aces to Glenn's five assists, two blocks and one ace.

Makenzie Moea'i had a match-high 15 kills, while contributing five digs.

Stephanie Thelen fell short of a double-double with a match-high 40 assists and eight digs. Thelen also had six kills and four blocks (one solo).

Thelen and Madeline Westman tied for the team-lead in blocks with four apiece. Both had one solo stuff and three assisted blocks.

Overall, the Rebels had three players rack up 10 or more digs with Allison Davies joining Falemaka and Glenn in the group. Davies had 13 on the day.

TCU was paced by a double-double from Megan Munce (37 assists and 11 digs) and 11 kills from both Kristen Hester and Stephanie Holland. Sarah Joeckel led the Horned Frogs in digs with 12.

UNLV returns to Las Vegas for two Mountain West matches this week. On Thursday, Oct. 13, the Rebels host Boise State at 7:00 pm. Two days later on Saturday, Oct. 15, Air Force comes to the Cox Pavilion for a Saturday matinee at 1:00 pm.
