Feb. 25, 2011

Final Stats

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UNLV Rebels (6-6) split their pair of games at UC Riverside's Amy S. Harrison Classic Friday morning. UNLV defeated the Boise State Broncos (2-8) by a 9-0 score before dropping a 4-3 decision to Cal State Northridge (5-7) at Amy S. Harrison Field.

UNLV's offense was led by Pauline Monreal, who racked up three hits (one home run), four RBI, three runs and three walks. The Rebels had four others scatter two hits apiece on the day.

Game 1 - Boise State UNLV jumped on the scoreboard early with a run in the first inning aided by three walks issued by Morgan Barnes' (0-2) and a single from Ashli Holland. Paige Emerson led off the contest with a walk and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Elena Fata. Holland then singled to left to put runners on the corners. Barnes followed that by walking Tayler Van Acker and Monreal consecutively. Monreal was credited with an RBI on the bases-loaded walk.

The one-run lead was all that Amanda Oliveto (5-2) would need en route to notching her fifth win of the year and her fourth complete game. Oliveto's first career shutout was aided by holding Boise State's offense in-check. She struck out seven and only allowed three hits and no walks.

The Rebels increased their lead to 5-0 in the third with help from four runs off of three hits and three more free passes dished out by Barnes. Fata got the offensive going with a lead-off single. After getting an out and Fata standing at third, Barnes walked three straight to score the first run of the frame. The final walk to Korin Cuico forced the Broncos to go to their bullpen and summon Aubray Zell to the circle.

Zell promptly threw a wild pitch to Kylie Wagner, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, and scored Van Acker from third and moved Monreal and Cuico into scoring position. Wagner stepped back into the batter's box and laced a two-run single to left to end the four-run stanza.

UNLV added another score in the fourth off an RBI-single by Monreal that scored Van Acker from second. Van Acker had initially reached on single to left and took second on a wild pitch from Zell.

Rayna Bradshaw and Emerson combined to put three more tallies on the board in the seventh. Bradshaw had a two-run double to center, while Emerson followed with a run-scoring single a few batters later.

Barnes suffered the loss in 2.1 innings of work. She was touched for five runs on two hits and gave up six walks.

Game 2 - Cal State Northridge Cal State Northridge snapped a 3-3 scoreless tie in the seventh inning with a run for the win. Jennifer Mosier led off the final frame and was hit by a pitch from Jessica O'Connor (0-4), which spelled the end of her day in the circle. Oliveto was brought into the contest in relief. She got the first batter she faced to ground out, which let Mosier move to second. Korinne Randazzo followed with a hard-hit single to second that allowed Mosier to score.

UNLV began the game with a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Emerson started the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Fata. Emerson later scored on a fielder's choice grounder put in play by Holland.

The Matadors countered with a run of their own in the second off an RBI-single by Mosie.

The Rebels went up 3-1 in the third with thanks to a two-run blast by Monreal after Van Acker had reached safely via an error.

Northridge used the long ball to pull even at 3-all in the fourth. Mikayla Thielgas and Jaci Carlsen hit back-to-back home runs in the inning that ended Wagner's day in the circle.

Hannah Fraijo (3-1) earned the win in complete-game fashion. Fraijo allowed three runs in the contest. She walked three and struck out three, as well.

Wagner earned a no-decision in 3.2 innings of work after giving up three runs on five hits.

O'Connor was saddled with the loss in 2.1 innings of relief. She struck out four and walked two, but gave up one run.

UNLV returns to action Saturday at 9:00 am against the host UC Riverside Highlanders at Amy S. Harrison Field.
