SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team closed out action at the Battle at Rancho Bernardo, finishing in 10th place among the 18-field team that included six of the top 10 teams in the nation.
Senior Therese Koelbaek shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to grab her highest finish this season, a tie for second. Koelbaek opened today's round with birdies on three of the first five holes. After bogeying the par-4 15th, she carded three straight pars to finish the front nine at 2-under. Bogies on four of the first seven holes on the back nine before carding a birdie on the par-4 ninth to close out her final round 73.
"Therese played a great tournament this week," said first-year head coach Amy Bush. "She started off today hot and struggled a bit on the backside, but ended on a high note to grab her best finish this season amongst a highly touted field."
Seventh-ranked Purdue held onto its lead heading into the final round to capture first place, finishing at 15-over par for the tournament. No. 1 Southern California was seven strokes behind while third-ranked UCLA was just a stroke behind the Trojans. No. 20 Georgia was fourth (+39) while No. 22 Auburn rounded out the top five in fifth (+41).
"I think our players showed they are capable of playing with some of the top teams in the country this week," added Bush. "We are happy with the top-10 finish, but will use the next two weeks to get better and compete at Half Moon Bay."
Sophomore Ellis Keenan shot a 5-over par final round of 77 to finish tied for 44th while senior Alejandra Guacaneme followed with a 78 (+6) and tied for 62nd.
The Rebels will be off for nearly two weeks before they resume action at The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Half Moon Bay Calif., April 4-5.
