Thompson Earns MWC Honors

UNLV's Kelli Thompson received All-Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Honorable Mention honors as the league announced their season awards on Monday.

Thompson, a 6-0 sophomore guard from Compton, Calif., earns her first league honors after finishing the regular season with a team-high 14.4 points per game averaged, which led the Lady Rebels and was seventh-best in the conference. She also ranks in the MWC in several other categories, including fifth in three-pointers per game (2.1), 10th in steals (1.5 per game) and 11th in free throw percentage (74%).

She scored in double-figures in a team-best 25 games this year, and posted a career-high of 27 points earlier this season in a 12-point home win over Colorado State.

Senior Aubrey Vandiver of Wyoming was named MWC Player of the Year, while Mindy Bonham was the Defensive Player of the Year. Michelle Plouffe from Utah was named Freshman of the Year, while San Diego State's Courtney Clements picked up the Newcomer of the Year honor. The last two awards went to Kristen Riley from BYU as the 6th Player of the Year, and Jeff Judkins as Coach of the Year.

The All-MWC First Team was made up of Vandiver, teammate Hilary Carlson, TCU's Helena Sverrisdottir and Emily Carter, and Bonham. Named to the second team was Coriann Fraughton (BYU), Kim Mestdagh (Colorado State), Starr Crawford (TCU), Plouffe, and Iwalani Rodrigues (Utah). Comprising the third team was Haley Hall (BYU), Sam Martin (CSU), Amanda Best (New Mexico), Jessika Bradley (San Diego State) and Paris Johnson (SDSU).

The Lady Rebels finished the regular season at 11-19 and came in eighth place with a 4-12 record in league play. UNLV, the eighth seed in the 2011 MWC Tournament, opens against fifth-seeded Utah in the first round on Tuesday at 4:30 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
