LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team was unable to pull off a series sweep over rival Mountain West Conference opponent BYU, falling 9-4 in Saturday's series finale at Wilson Stadium.
Trent Cook and Scott Dysinger combined to seven of UNLV's 13 hits on the day while Cook picked up two RBI and Dysinger scored two of the four Rebel runs.
After a scoreless first, BYU (18-14, 6-5 Mountain West) opened the top of the second with a pair of runs off Dillion Robinson's two-run homer to right field.
The Rebels (24-14, 4-7 Mountain West) cut the lead to one in the third when Cook tripled in Dysinger.
The Cougars used a four-run fifth inning to push its lead to 6-1. After Andrew Law was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Max Javate came in relief of starter Buddy Borden. A Richie Jimenez error at third allowed Alex Wolfe to reach first and Law to advance to third. Following Ryan Bernal's fielder's choice RBI, Jimenez's second error of the inning led to another run and gave BYU runners and second and third. Austin Hall walked before Robinson singled up the middle, driving in his third and fourth RBI of the game to cap the scoring.
Cook's second RBI base-hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to 6-2, but that would be as close as the Rebels would come.
BYU added one in the seventh and two more in the ninth and held off a late UNLV comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth, limiting the Rebels to one run and two runners stranded following Scott Berke's game-ending fly out to center field.
The Rebels will hit the road next week for a four-game road trip in the Lonestar State, traveling to Waco, Texas on Tuesday, April 19 before traveling east to Fort Worth for a three-game set with MWC rival TCU beginning Thursday.
