April 29, 2011

Box Score

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team broke out of a four-game slump in a big way, crushing the University of New Mexico, 8-0, here at Wilson Stadium in the series opener.

Tanner Peters was overpowering in his fifth complete-game effort of the year for the Rebels (26-18, 5-10 Mountain West). The junior righty matched a season-high for pitches with 126 and struck out five while walking just one and not allowing a run to score.

Brandon Bayardi led the way for the UNLV offense going 2-for-3 with four RBI on the night. Trent Cook and Scott Dysinger each extending their hitting streaks to 19 and 13 respectively.

New Mexico's (12-30, 7-9 Mountain West) Rudy Jaramillo cruised through the first four innings before the Rebel offense came alive in the fifth, scoring all four runs with two outs.

Richie Jimenez reached on a Kyle Stiner error and moved to second following a Cash Thomas sacrifice bunt. After Casey Sato struck out for the second out of the inning, Trevor Kirk singled through the left side, driving in Jimenez. Kirk stole second and scored one batter later on Scott Dysinger's RBI single through the right side, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Trent Cook reached on UNM's second error of the inning while Dysinger advanced to third. Bayardi's two-RBI double off the wall in left field capped the scoring at 4-0.

Following a scoreless sixth, UNLV increased its lead to 7-0 on a Cook RBI single and Bayardi's second two-RBI hit of the night.

Peters worked a three-up, three-down eighth before UNLV added another run in the bottom half to push the score to 8-0. The Simi Valley, Calif. native has thrown a complete-game winning effort in each start following a loss this season.

D.J. Peterson singled to start the ninth for UNM before an odd double play crushed any attempt of a Lobos rally. John Twichell reached on a fielder's choice, but rounded the base following a wide throw by Jimenez, prompting catcher Ryan Scott to fire over to Cook at first for the out. Peters then got Luke Campbell to ground out to second to secure the win for UNLV.

The Rebels and Lobos will be back in action tomorrow night for game two of their weekend series. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.
