LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the third time in the last five days, the UNLV baseball team has played a game that was decided in the ninth inning, only this time the Rebels were on the winning end, downing San Diego State University 4-3 here in the series opener at Wilson Stadium.
Scott Dysinger roped a 2-1 Bryan Crabb offering down the left-field line, allowing Richie Jimenez to score from second and lift the Rebels to the 4-3 win. Dysinger was 2-for-4 on the night with an RBI and a run scored to lead UNLV at the plate.
The Rebels (33-21, 10-11 Mountain West) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Ryan Scott's two-run single through the right side. Trevor Kirk and Dysinger had each singled to start the inning before advancing on Trent Cook's groundout to the pitcher.
UNLV starting pitcher Tanner Peters retired the first six batters of the game before giving up a leadoff single in the third to Tim Zier. Evan Potter doubled down the left-field line two batters later to give San Diego State (19-34, 9-13 Mountain West) runners at second and third with just one out. Cody Smith's RBI single to left made it a 2-1 game before Pat Colwell tied it up with his sacrifice fly to right.
Peters (9-3) would settle down following the third, allowing just four hits over the ensuing four innings, registering his 13th straight quality start. The junior righty scattered seven hits over 7.1 innings, allowing just a pair of runs while striking out seven.
The Rebels took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Scott Berke scored on a Cole Swanson wild pitch with the bases loaded. Berke had walked to start the inning before Kirk doubled to left and Dysinger was hit by a pitch. Swanson would walk Cook to load the bases one batter later, but retired the next three Rebels to get out of the jam.
Peters was able to get the first out in the eighth inning before first-year head coach Tim Chambers turned to the bullpen with him sitting at 126 pitches on the night. Lefty Jesse Garcia entered and promptly struck out Ben Vasko and got Zier to ground out to short to end the inning.
Dillon Bryant singled off Zack Hartman to start the San Diego State ninth and advanced to second on Potter's sacrifice bunt. Bryant then advanced to third on Smith's groundout to short before Mitch Bluman's pinch-hit RBI single to left knotted the game at 3-3. The Rebels intentionally loaded the bases following a Brandon Meredith single to center before Hartman struck out Chris Wilson to end the inning and threat.
Jimenez walked to start the Rebel ninth and moved into scoring position following Berke's sacrifice bunt. Kirk was intentionally walked to give SDSU the force at third, but Dysinger found the gap with a drive down the line to lift UNLV to the win.
The Rebels and Aztecs will be back in action tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT here at Wilson Stadium.
