LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team ran into trouble on the mound and was unable to dig out of an early hole, falling 11-4 to San Diego State University here in the second game of its three-game series.
The Rebels (33-22, 10-12 Mountain West) were led by Trevor Kirk and Scott Dysinger on the night who combined to go 6-for-10. Kirk's three RBI were a game-high.
San Diego State (20-34, 10-13 Mountain West) raced out to a 6-0 lead after scoring four runs in the third and two more in the fifth. Brandon Meredith's two run double down the left-field line was followed by a Dillon Bryant RBI single to right field to make it 3-0. Chris Wilson's RBI sacrifice fly two batters later closed out the scoring for the Aztecs in the third.
UNLV pitching miscues led to SDSU's two-run fifth, with Buddy Borden walking in a run with the bases loaded and was called for a balk during the next at bat, allowed the Aztecs to extend their lead to 6-0.
The Rebels offense came alive in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit in half to 6-3. Cash Thomas' RBI double drove in Richie Jimenez who had walked earlier in the inning for the first run of the night. With runners on second and third, Kirk singled up the middle, adding two more, forcing SDSU to turn to their pen. Craig Rasmussen entered and quickly got the second out before picking off Dysinger at first to end the inning and Rebel rally.
SDSU answered UNLV's rally with four runs in the eighth to take a commanding 10-3 lead. The Aztecs added one in the top of the ninth to make it 11-3 before UNLV responded with a one-run rally that was ended with Dysinger striking out.
The Rebels and Aztecs will wrap up action tomorrow at Wilson Stadium. UNLV will honor its eight seniors playing in their last home game prior to the scheduled 1:05 p.m. PT start time.
