SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team could not take advantage of five San Diego State errors on the night, falling 4-3 in the second game of the Mountain West Conference Championship here tonight at Tony Gwynn Field.
The Rebels (33-24) mustered only three hits on the night and could not take advantage of a bases loaded situation in the top of the ninth, suffering their third straight loss, all to the Aztecs (22-34).
UNLV took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first after Trevor Kirk and Scott Dysinger each reached on a walk. Corey Black's failed pickoff attempt on Kirk at second allowed each runner to move up a base before a Tim Zier error at second let both runs cross the plate.
Starting pitcher Tanner Peters worked through the first five innings with relative ease. He yielded just four hits and allowed one runner to reach third, taking advantage of double plays to get out of both the third and fifth innings.
Ryan Scott led the Rebel sixth off with a walk and moved to second on Travis Feiner's sacrifice bunt. Black's second failed pickoff attempt of the night allowed Scott to reach third before scoring two batters later on Cash Thomas's fielder choice to second.
Peters' 3-0 lead was cut to one in the bottom of the sixth when Cody Smith sent the first pitch of his at bat over the Wall of Fame building in right field. It was just the second home run Peters has given up this season.
Following a scoreless seventh, San Diego State took advantage of two Rebel miscues. After Pat Colwell singled, Evan Potter's base knock to right was fielded by Thomas, who fired to third. Feiner's throw over to first was bobbled by Trent Cook, allowing Colwell to score and tie the game at 3-3. Potter moved to third on Zier's single through the left side and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch from Peters.
Peters notched his eighth complete game in the loss, becoming the Mountain West Conference's all-time leader for complete games in a single season and career. He scattered eight hits on the night and struck out six, eclipsing the 100 strikeout mark for the second consecutive year.
UNLV will be back in action tomorrow, taking on BYU at 11 a.m. PT. The Rebels took two of three games from the Cougars this season in Las Vegas.
