Final Stats
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (23-18 overall, 5-5 MWC) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim an 11-10 come-from-behind win over the San Diego State Aztecs (29-18, 5-4) Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium. UNLV entered its final at-bat trailing by twp before a solo shot by Ashli Holland and a two-run blast by Tayler Van Acker turned things around in the home team's favor. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Aztecs, while included five straight losses to SDSU in Las Vegas. The victory also improved UNLV to 5-0 in extra-inning contests this season.
Holland was instrumental in UNLV's offense against SDSU, as she went 5-for-5 with two home runs and two doubles. She also knocked in four RBI and scored three runs, as well. Her 13 total bases and five hits are new program records, while her two homers pushed her into a tie for ninth overall in UNLV's career record book.
The Aztecs staked themselves to a 5-2 lead through 4.5 innings of action before the Rebels knotted things up in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own. Paige Emerson began the offensive with a triple to right and was then joined on the bases by Elena Fata following a walk. Holland then notched an RBI-single that ended SDSU's Samantha Beasley's day in the circle. Kristin May was brought in to pitch for Beasley and was rudely welcomed to the game by an RBI-single from Tayler Aleman. Holland and Aleman both moved into scoring position following the hit. Pauline Monreal then tied the game up at 5-all when she hit a fielder's choice grounder to short that allowed Holland to score.
During the sixth and seventh innings UNLV matched everything that SDSU put on the scoreboard. The Aztecs got a two-run homer by Hayley Miles in the sixth off of Jessica O'Connor, who entered the game at the start of the inning. The Rebels scored on a wild pitch and another RBI-single from Holland after May was substituted for Bailey Micetich (16-11).
In the seventh, SDSU used a defensive miscue by UNLV catcher Bri Bernardi to take a short-lived one-run lead. The Rebels countered by loading the bases on Micetich prior to Emerson picked up the tying RBI on a fielder's choice.
After the Aztecs got a two-run homer from Lorena Klopp, UNLV stepped up in its final at-bat and delivered. Holland led off the stanza with her second solo shot of the game. Aleman then doubled to the fence in left to put the game-winning run on the bases. Van Acker then ended the never-ending, three-hour affair and hit an opposite-field dinger to left-center.
Kylie Wagner (2-2) picked up the win in one inning of relief work. Wagner struck out one and did not allow a hit.
Micetich was stuck with the loss in 1.2 frames of relief. She was touched for four runs on four hits. She struck out one against two walks.
In all, the teams threw three hurlers in the game and each side allowed 12 hits. UNLV's struck out four and walked four, while SDSU's fanned eight and issued five free passes.
UNLV returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 12:30 pm contest against San Diego State. The game will be televised live by CBS Sports Network.
