Lopez And Thomas Earn Academic All-MW

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV men's basketball forwards Carlos Lopez and Quintrell Thomas have both earned Spring 2011 Academic All-Mountain West honors, the conference announced Monday.

Lopez, who was a freshman in 2010-11, has a 3.01 cumulative grade point average. His major is undeclared. Thomas was a sophomore this past year and has a 3.05 cumulative GPA with a major of communication studies.

To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MW team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the school while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their team.

The two honorees for men's basketball this year is the program's highest number of honorees since also having two in 2006-07. Four Runnin' Rebels were recognized for the achivement in 2005-06.

During the 2010-11 season, Lopez played in all of UNLV's 33 games and averaged 4.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He shot 53.3 percent from the field and averagd 11.7 minutes per game. Thomas also played in all 33 games and made 26 starts. He was fifth on the team in scoring average with 6.7 ppg and was second on the team in rebounding with 5.2 rpg. He played in an average of 15.4 mpg and shot 52.7 percent from the field.

The Runnin' Rebels recorded an overall mark of 24-9 on the season and made their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years.
