2011 Spring Academic All-Mountain West

UNLV's athletic department had a record-setting 95 student-athletes earn Spring 2011 Academic All-Mountain West honors, the league office announced today. The 95 awardees bests the previous mark of 92 that were honored just last year. In all, the Rebel baseball and softball programs had the most honorees in their respective sports among the nine member institutions, while women's golf, men's tennis and women's tennis tied for the lead. This is the fourth straight year that baseball, softball and men's tennis were first in the MW.

UNLV posted its fourth consecutive year of having at least 134 student-athletes achieve academic recognition with 42 individuals honored in the fall of 2010 (39 in the MW and three in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) in addition to the 92 today.

Overall, 782 student-athletes from the MW were named to the academic team, and this year's mark surpassed the previous league record of 772 honorees set in 2008-09.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.

The women's track and field team had a program-best 17 student-athletes to this year's academic squad.

Women's swimming and diving had the most honored by any sport at UNLV with 19.

Baseball and softball joined women's track and field and women's swimming and diving in the double-digit category with their 15 and 10 selections.

Men's tennis, women's tennis and men's swimming and diving had seven apiece. Women's golf had five and the men's team had three. Both basketball programs had two each.
