LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The 2011 conference champion UNLV women's tennis team set a program record in the classroom as seven of its players earned a spot on the Academic All-Mountain West Team, which was released Monday.
The Lady Rebels tied with New Mexico for the league lead this year.
Pacing UNLV was a pair of senior four-time honorees who also finished ranked in the top 10 in all-time victories at the school: Anna Maskaljun, who boasted a 3.50 cumulative grade point average; and Adrienn Hidvegi, who closed her playing career with a 3.20 GPA.
Senior Jana Albers (3.21), who made the list both years after transferring from Nebraska, and junior Rumyana Terzieva (3.46) were repeat honorees. Making their first appearances were sophomore Ella Bourchier (3.60) and both of the squad's freshmen -- Lucia Batta (3.38) and Aleksandra Josifoska (3.17).
To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor.
Head coach Kevin Cory's program also saw two players earning the additional honor of 2011 MW Scholar-Athlete - Maskaljun and Bourchier.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
